Sustainability

Sustainability is an approach to conducting affairs within an organisation that leads to environmental protection so that future generations will be able to enjoy the natural world and derive its benefits and services to the same level as the present generation. Because of the risk of climate disruption and its negative impacts from greenhouse gas emissions, all countries of the world agreed at the UN Climate Summit in Durban this month to enter into legally binding limits to emissions from 2020 and to commence work towards this objective immediately. This trend is creating a business climate that will more and more reward companies that implement sustainability strategies.

A sustainable organisation

An organisation that has implemented a sustainability strategy will typically have the following features:

*A workforce of staff and management that have received training in environmentally sound and sustainable practices
*Work practices that promote efficient use of electrical energy, minimising energy consumption and reducing operating costs
*Efficient use of fuels in goods and people transport
*Efficient waste management
*Energy conscious procurement policies for vehicle and equipment acquisition and replacement
*Gradual reduction of greenhouse emissions from energy conservation and conversion to renewable energy where possible

Sustainability benefits

A survey of global business executives by the Economist Intelligence Unit found that corporate sustainability initiatives delivered many benefits. The survey commissioned by KPMG questioned more than 370 senior executives at companies worldwide. The survey confirmed that the main reason for the development of sustainability strategies remained the desire to enhance brand reputation or comply with environmental regulations. However, the benefits derived from these strategies covered a wide range, with 32 per cent claiming sustainability helped them attract and retain customers, 31 per cent citing increased profitability, and 25 per cent stating that they had developed better quality products and services as a result of sustainability efforts.
